Is Reflexology New?

Reflexology is an ancient healing method utilizing a massage technique using range of motions, and stretching techniques applied to the feet.  Treating with zone therapy, and reflex points, and acupressure applied to the feet.  I t can also be applied to hand, ears and part of the body.

Reflexology was thought to come from Egypt in  2500 BC.  It was rediscovered in 1913 in United States by Dr. Fitzgerald a ear, nose and throat doctor.  He was a surgeon at St. Francis Hospital, Hartford Connecticut.  Dr. Fitzgerald would do surgery with just the pressure of his hands, or tools like surgeon grips on reflex points.  Dr. Fitzgerald taught reflexology to doctors,   it was also taught in chiropractors schools.

Dr. Fitzgerald was known as the Father of 'Zone Therapy' as this was the first words coined for reflexology.  He was the most forward thinking of medical men, who became a natural healer through the art of using pressure therapy to benefit and heal the human body.

Rebirth Of Reflexology - 1913

"Reflexology is Nature's push-button secret for vibrant health, more dynamic living, abundant personal energy, and better living without pain.  A scientific technique of massage that has a definite effect on normal functioning of all parts of the body." - Dr. William Fitzgerald, 1913

Reflexology Is International - Medical History

In Russia because of the ability to diagnose with reflexology, you have to be a doctor to practice reflexology.

In China reflexology is practiced in the hospitals, by nurses and doctors.

In Switzerland, nurses working with terminally ill cancer patients routinely use reflexology to decrease pain and make patients more comfortable.

In Great Britain, reflexology is part of the National Health Service.

Reflexology is not 'massage'

Reflexology is the application of specific pressure to reflex points in the hands, ears, and feet.  There are zones and reflex ares in the feet and hands corresponding to all the body parts.  Reflexology works through the nervous system and lymphatic system.

Massage, by contrast, is the systematic and scientific manipulation of the soft tissue of the body.  Massage works through the muscle system.

Reflexology In Addition To Medical Care

Reflexologist never prescribes or offers diagnosis.  The services of a therapist in Reflexology are in addition to those of a medical practitioner.  Reflexology is a persuasive therapy, not an invasive therapy, so there can be no contraindications.
